“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain
Over the past few years, I have found myself plugged into technology more often than not. I am a teacher and at work I am constantly hooked up to my laptop: Projecting lessons, developing unit plans, sitting through professional development sessions, etc. Rather than coming home and giving the screen time a rest, I just plop down on the couch and pick up the remote, ready to engulf myself in the world of reality television rather than actual reality. Ladies and gentleman, this is a problem.
And I’m not sure that my problem is that unique. I think that as a society, we are having trouble peeling our eyes away from the glow of a laptop. Technology has made it easier for us to see the world, but experiencing that same world is something truly different.
This is a blog about taking the time to turn away from the television. This is a blog about unplugging from a world of two-dimensional images and transitioning to actual experiences in my day-to-day life. I will not remember the moments in front of a screen, but I will remember moments when I explored, discovered, and truly experienced my life. I look forward to sharing my journey as I put down the laptop and try something new each week!
